Snow and Skiing

Boise is so much prettier in winter when there's a pretty white blanket to contrast the dullness of the ground and hazy skies. We have had fun on the days we have had the fluff. We've made snow angels, used the sled, and created 1.33 snowmen. Trevor learned the way to eat snow and can't get enough (thanks, Aunt Zeesa : ) )
Trevor and Scott practiced catching snowflakes. And, we took some historic trips to the mountain for Trevor's first tracks downhill!

"Hey boys, sit in this sled and take a fun and comfy ride!"
"What's wrong, Joel? Aren't you warm and comfy and ready for more in the get-up?"

Scott decided last year to make 2009-2010 the beginning year for Trevor's skiing career. So we (Scott & Trevor & I) kicked it off with the annual showing of the latest Warren Miller movie at the Egyptian Theatre downtown.

For the first time I walked away a little more anxious than pepped up about the ski season. There is a part early in the movie about Alexis Roland. She's the newest snowboarding phenomenon and she is 10 years old. She is amazing and super talented. And, the most memorable part of the movie for me was that she flies off that pipe with her hair up and (*gasp*) without a helmet. What?! I guess motherhood comes with a vivid imagination for disaster. However, I don't really even flinch when my boys do "tail whips" or flips, so I guess in twenty years I'll be desensitized and ready to drop them off on some rocky mountain peak by chopper.

When we got home from the movie Trevor started practicing his skiing by pretending to go down the mountain (a bean bag) like a mogul maniac. He would, of course, check his imaginary pole straps and boots before jump-skiing down the mountain into an imaginary pool and SPLASHING!

When the snow fell last month he preferred snow biking over sledding. I shouldn't be surprised. The boy TREASURES bikes, bike riding, pretending to splash into a pool on a bike, and just falling and crashing off his bikes. Crashing is the best part in almost every activity. We try to explain to him that the purpose is to stay on the bike and to stick the landing. I laugh even as I type because I can picture his slow motion falls onto the sidewalk so as not to hurt himself too much. I guess the snow on the ground makes the (softer) crash more irresistible : )

We recently took all of this toy bikes and riding bikes away as punishment for something and he wasn't even phased. He has been riding his new pillow bikes all over this house. With a pillow between his legs he cheerfully jumps a "three sixty whips." The boy is both resilient and imaginative.

Our first trip to the mountain was accompanied by Aunt Jen and Aunt Zeesa. Their help and enthusiasm was priceless. It took a LOT of effort to get two trips on the magic carpet ride, and Trevor did a great job and was excited to be there and we were all excited with him! Scott let go off him after we first got his skis on and we all stood back with cameras in hand : ) It was family paparazzi.

We got a harness for him after that trip, so he did get to ride the chair lift at Brundage in McCall. Scott and I were both able to snowboard while Zeesa and Papa took him up the Easy Street lift and helped watch Joel! It was a gorgeous day and a fun memory to make with our friends visiting from Hong Kong-- Chuck and Kate. Poor Joel didn't last as long in the colder weather, but we'll have better gear for him next time.
